3rd International Working Group Meeting

Melbourne and Brisbane, Australia

2nd to 6th June, 2003

General Information:

The 3rd International ACES Working Group Meeting will be held from the 2nd to 6th June, 2002 in Melbourne and Brisbane. The meeting is divided into two parts. The first part of the meeting (2nd to 4th June) is a workshop session titled "Computational Earthquake Physics and Solid Earth Simulation" as part of the 2003 International Conference on Computational Science (ICCS2003) in Melbourne and will consist of a series of formal talks. The program of the ACES workshop within the ICCS meeting is given at http://iccs03.cs.uwa.edu.au/program/WorkshopsICCS2003Page4.html and the complete ICCS program is at http://iccs03.cs.uwa.edu.au/program/ProgramIndex.htm. Embedding of the ACES WG formal talks within the ICCS meeting aimed to foster cross-disciplinary fertilization between the ACES community and other domains of computational science. For further information about ICCS2003, please refer to the conference web-site: http://iccs03.cs.uwa.edu.au. The second part of the meeting will be held in Brisbane and will consist of focused sessions and discussions of key issues for Working Group 2 (Scaling Physics) and Working Group 5 (Computational Environments and Algorithms).

Registration and accommodation for the first part of the meeting held at ICCS2003 in Melbourne can be arranged through the ICCS conference organisers. Online registration and accomodation bookings for this part of the meeting should be made by following the link to "Registration" on the ICCS2003 web-site. It is recommended that participants arrange to fly into Melbourne on the 1st June, 2003 and fly on to Brisbane from Melbourne on the evening of the 4th June, 2003. Participants are encouraged to make their own flight bookings.

The second part of the meeting (5th and 6th June) will be held at the Conrad Treasury, Brisbane. Accommodation for all participants at the Stamford Plaza will be arranged upon receipt of the registration form for the ACES WG Meeting Brisbane meeting. Unless otherwise indicated on this registration form, accomodation will be arranged for the 4th and 5th June, 2003. Morning and Afternoon Tea and Lunches will be provided on both days and there will be a Working Group Dinner on the evening of the 5th June, 2003. Participants will need to make their own dinner arrangements for the evenings of the 4th and 6th June, 2003.

The formal technical session as part of ICCS2003 in Melbourne is a workshop entitled "Computational Earthquake Physics and Solid Earth System Simulation". This will consist of 14 formal presentations. For further information, please refer to the preliminary program available at the ICCS2003 web-site
http://iccs03.cs.uwa.edu.au/program/WorkshopsICCS2003Page4.html.
This workshop spans 1.5 days during the first three days of the ICCS meeting leaving time for ACES WG participants to attend other sessions within the ICCS meeting.

It is intended that the second part of the meeting in Brisbane will be less formal, with emphasis upon technical discussions rather than formal presentations. There will be two concurrent Working Group sessions, one for WG2: Scaling Physics focused on the Physics of Earthquakes, and one for WG5: Computational Environments and Algorithms. For each of the WG sessions, time has been allocated for two or more key collaborative research note speeches overviewing the key issues and research questions to motivate subsequent discussions on the issues and aiming to develop a collaborative research plan. An outline of the intended program for the Brisbane meeting is included with this information. A final program will be available prior to the commencement of the meeting.
